Metito eyes expansion plans

METITO, THE UAE-based utilities provider, is unlikely to go for an IPO this year and may opt to concentrate on aggressive expansions first.
  • Nakheel to commence projects as contractor payments recover

    Nakheel will reportedly resume work on at least six projects by early October as it settles outstanding bills with contractors. The developer, owned by Dubai World, is restructuring US$10.5 billion owed to banks, contractors and service providers. Last month contractors started to receive payments from Nakheel leaving the way clear for stalled projects around the emirate to resume.

Nakheel striving to secure 65 per cent settlement rate

Nakheel has announced that it has secured settlement on 50 per cent of agreed claims with contractors and suppliers and other trade creditors, still short of the 65 per cent required. Nakheel officials met with senior members from the UAE Contactors Association recently as part of its efforts to ensure the settlement of claims to its trade creditors as part of its recapitalisation plan according to Gulf News.

 

Iraq cement factory contract awarded

Iraq has awarded UK investment and private equity company, MerchantBridge, a contract to upgrade a large cement factory as the government seeks to rebuild the country. According to The National newspaper after winning the contract from the Iraqi ministry of industry and minerals, MerchantBridge will spend US$200mn on renovating and operating the plant under a 15-year lease.

 

Demand for mining equipment set to increase

GLOBAL DEMAND FOR mining equipment (including separately sold parts and attachments) is projected to increase 4.9 per cent per year through 2013 to US$58 billion.  China and India will be leading sources of mining equipment demand. 
 

Crushers struggle with production drop

Production levels of aggregates and at crushers have dropped by almost 40 per cent following a drastic drop in demand, industry officials said recently. Manufacturers of machinery and spares for crusher units yesterday said they were aiming at markets in Saudi Arabia and other GCC countries to compensate for the drop in the demand in the UAE.

  • Two more gas turbines commissioned

    Two new gas turbines with a total production capacity of 400 MW will be commissioned by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) before the end of the current year, according to DEWA managing director and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer. The utility will also commission two desalination units with a total production capacity of 160,000 litres of water, in addition to four auxiliary boilers according to Al Tayer. The units of power generation and water desalination project (Station M) have come into service this year to raise the production capacity of both electricity and desalinated water of DEWA.
