Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has poured safety concrete on the reactor containment building for Unit 3 at Barakah in the UAE

The company said in a statement that concrete in excess of 1,494 cu/m was poured. This is the first stage in building the Unit 3 nuclear reactor, it added.

?More concrete will be poured until the wall of reactor containment building for Unit 3 is installed. Construction of the reactor containment building for Unit 3 will be completed over the next three years and it will begin commercial operations from 2019,? ENEC said.

The construction for Unit 3 and Unit 4 nuclear reactors has been approved by Federal Authority of Nuclear Regulation (FANR). The company added that Unit 1 is more than 57 per cent complete and Unit 2 is expected to begin operations from 2018.

Mohamed Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC, said, ?Once the four nuclear reactors are complete, it will provide 25 per cent of the UAE?s electricity needs and save up to 12mn tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year.?
