Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG) has announced that its joint venture (JV) with Al Jaber Engineering has been awarded a contract worth US$1.7bn for the design and construction of the New Orbital Highway Project in Qatar

Officials from HLG said the New Orbital Highway Project would take close to three years to complete, and will consist of 56km of road, five principal interchanges, and will connect Mesaieed Industrial Area and New Port Projects to Salwa Road. There would also be two separated truck lanes in each direction, along with five regular lanes and provisions for two further lanes in order to segregate heavy goods vehicles from regular traffic, HLG stated.

The project is part of a seven-year overhaul of Qatar's road network that began in 2012. This overhaul consists of 34 major projects, aimed at creating 980km of new roads, with 240 multi-level interchanges, underpasses and flyovers.

Jos? Antonio L?pez-Mon?s, CEO and MD of HLG, said, ?The Orbital Highway is a major opportunity for HLG and our joint venture partner Al Jaber Engineering, and we are pleased to have been selected by Ashghal (the Public Works Authority of Qatar) to work in partnership with it to deliver such an important element of national infrastructure for Qatar, which is a very important market for HLG.?

The company added that the new highway would include infrastructure improvements such as a stormwater drainage network, treated sewage effluent networks, electrical and telecommunication networks, street lighting and substations.
