Outotec awarded smelter project in Saudi Arabia

Outotec_comCristal Global has awarded Outotec an EPC contract for the design and installation of a new ilmenite smelter project in Jazan Economic City, Saudi Arabia

The overall contract value exceeds US$433.2 million and the site, which was originally set to be located in Yanbu, is scheduled to be operational in 2014.

"The demand of titanium dioxide is growing rapidly in Asia and I am very happy about the implementation concept of this large project," said Outotec chief executive officer Pertti Korhonen.

The plant will be constructed on a turnkey basis. The plant’s initial annual capacity will be 500,000 tonnes of titanium slag, and its design will enable expansion to one million tonnes. Additionally, it will produce 235,000 tonnes of high purity pig iron as a valuable co-product.

Outotec's scope of delivery includes basic and detail engineering, process technology, supply of all equipment, site preparation and civil works, equipment installation, construction and commissioning of the ilmenite smelting plant.
