Metito eyes expansion plans

METITO, THE UAE-based utilities provider, is unlikely to go for an IPO this year and may opt to concentrate on aggressive expansions first.

Siemens Energy has secured a US$130mn order to supply gas turbine packages to Saudi Arabia. The components are to be installed in the Hail Extension II and Al Qurayat Expansion II power plants. The purchasers are the Alfanar Construction Company and Saudi Services for Electromechanic Works (SSEM) respectively and they will perform the project on a turnkey basis for the Saudi Electric Company (SEC) utility. Delivery of the components is scheduled for 2010 and 2011. The Hail Extension II gas turbine power plant is located in central Saudi Arabia and is made of two units, with a total capacity of 160MW. The demand for power in the Hail region is increasing by 10 per cent annually. To meet these rising demands the plant will come on line as a fast track project as early as the summer of 2011. The new Al Qurayat Expansion II gas turbine plant is located in the north west of Saudi Arabia. Consisting of two power plant units, the plant will have a total installed capacity of 136 MW. Siemens will supply a total of four of the powerful SGT6-2000E gas turbines for the two plants, along with four generators and the auxiliary equipment.

"Siemens and Saudi Arabia can look back upon 75 years of excellent cooperation, during which we successfully contributed to the build-up of the country's infrastructure with our local partners," said Lutz Kahlbau, CEO and president of Siemens Ltd. Saudi Arabia. "We are very proud of this, and there still remains much work to be done in the future. Siemens is in an excellent position to contribute with its technology to the rapid growth in Saudi Arabia."

At the beginning of this year, Siemens handed over the Shuaibah IWPP, with the integrated seawater desalination facility, to Shuaibah Water and Electricity Company (SWEC). Siemens Energy built this power plant as a turnkey project together with its consortium partner Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd. The overall plant has an installed capacity of 900 MW and produces approximately 880,000 cu/m of drinking water daily for the cities of Mecca, Jeddah, Taif and Al Baha.

Business and Management

  • Skid order awarded for power plant expansion

Colfax Corporation, a global leader in fluid-handling solutions for critical applications, announced its Allweiler AG business unit will deliver a US$1.4mn fuel injection skid order through Siemens AG for use in gas turbines in Iraq. The skids will be used for power plant expansions in Kirkuk as well as new plants being built in Baiji and Baghdad. The first two skids will be completed in early 2011. The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity has ordered an additional five and has options to purchase three more.
