Standby power market facing slowdown

It would seem, on the face of the 2008 figures, that all was well with the business of selling diesel generating sets to the Middle East last year. Unfortunately while 2008 was boom time, 2009 is likely to be bust time. The forecast for the next two years (at least) is dismal and, in spite of a high demand for generating sets worldwide, many projects – possibly thousands – have been put on hold.

Careful analysis of the figures on exports from some 32 countries shipped into 20 countries in the Middle East indicates trends and changes that may be predictors of future market planning. (NB: figures in all tables include exports to North Africa, the countries of which are generally considered to be part of the Middle East territory in many sales programmes and budget allocations. In the main these six countries account for an average 15 per cent of the export figures by value).
Overall exports into the area rose by a modest US$90mn in 2008 to a record US$1.39 billion and 185,969 units ranging in size from 1 kVA to approximately 3000 kVA.
The US doubled its exports to the Middle East from US$138mn to US$293mn, as did China jumping from US$114mn in 2007 to a record US$242mn in 2008. Turkey’s exports nearly doubled, going from US$49mn to US$94mn last year.

Europe's performance has been less impressive, however – notably the UK, whose exports fell by US$178mn in 2008. The Eurozone countries, meanwhile, showed a smaller decline, falling by almost US$100mn. Nevertheless the UK is still the world market leader in diesel generating sets exporting over US$US350mn last year to the Middle East compared to the USA with US$293mn, the EU at US$242mn and China also now at US$242mn.
