The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has commissioned the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) to carry out a comprehensive road safety research programme

The move is a significant part of the Omani authorities? drive to improve road safety standards in the Sultanate.

According to World Highways, the multi-sector assessment will be carried out across 12 different disciplines.

These include road safety management, safety engineering, legislation and enforcement, education and awareness and post-crash response.

TRL will then develop an action plan featuring solutions to improve Oman?s road safety.

The action plan will use short to medium-term recommendations that bring about incremental enhancements in performance.

?We hope that the project will result in the implementation of a series of evidence based recommendations that will stabilise and reduce the high number of road deaths in the country,? TRL?s safety director, Tracy Savill, was quoted as saying.

TRL is already working in collaboration with ROP to design a comprehensive crash database and is installing its iMAAP network based crash analysis system in Oman.
