Linxon successfully energised the Shams substation in Dubai

9f6a96b843456b4b 800x800arLinxon has successfully energised the Shams 400/132 kV substation in Dubai, which will transport solar power from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (MBR) Solar Park into the Dubai electrical grid

Both the Shams substation and the MBR solar generating park are owned by DEWA (the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority); they are located inland, ca. 50 km south of Dubai. Once fully operational the combined facilities will have an overall capacity of more than 2,000 megavolt amperes (MVA) thereby delivering a key element of Dubai’s renewable energy strategy.

“The collaboration with Linxon has been very effective and the project has been progressing well despite ongoing COVID-19 challenges. Linxon has been ardent about delivering on time and has shared news of milestone achievements through virtual site tours using aerial drone technology. Delivery of this project contributes greatly to the development of Dubai’s electricity transmission grid and supports our renewable energy initiatives for the future generation,” said Hussain Lootah, executive vice-president of DEWA.

“This project was executed in full compliance with local safety and quality requirements, achieving more than two million safe man-hours without injuries. It was delivered by the agreed deadline, as first committed by Linxon to the customer,” said Stefan Reisacher, interim CEO of Linxon.

As part of the Dubai Government’s “Shams Dubai” initiative, DEWA has installed an on-grid solar array (260kW) as a special roof-top feature at the Shams substation. The energy generated from this roof-top array is used to supplement the utility grid in feeding HVAC system loads during the day.

As main contractor, Linxon provided design, production, installation and commissioning services for the 400 kV & 132 kV Gas Insulated Switchgears (GIS), 4 x 500MVA transformers (ICT), 2 x 100 MVAr reactors, 4 x 30MVAr reactors and associated protection system installed in the Shams substation. The substation control and monitoring system that was implemented complies fully with the latest DEWA cybersecurity system requirements.

Linxon commenced operations on 1 September 2018, undertaking turnkey electrical alternating current substation projects related to renewable and conventional power generation, power transmission and transportation solutions. Substations enable the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity. Within the substation, switchgear controls and protects the network from power outages and facilitates reliable electricity supply.
