Emal aluminium output hits 1mn tonnes

Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Aluminiums (Emal) Al Taweelah smelter has achieved a milestone in seeing the production of one million tonnes of aluminium in less than two years since its commission in December 2009.

With the average daily metal production since 2009 reaching 1,400 tonnes a day, the Emal smelter shows no signs of slowing down. Current production stands at 2,035 tonnes of hot metal per day, a statement said.

"With phase two construction now underway and expected to reach full production by 2014, Emal is well on track to meet future increased global aluminium demand. It is also significant that we have achieved this major landmark without compromising our commitment to the health and safety of our employees and our responsibility for the environment," said Emal President and CEO Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei.
