International power and automation technology provider ABB has won an order worth US$78mn from Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to supply transformers for two new combined-cycle power plants

Finalised in Q2 2014, the deal with SEC, Saudi Arabia?s national power operator, will see ABB deliver generator step-up (GSU) transformers, power transformers, and station service transformers, which will in turn boost transmission capacity in Riyadh and around the surrounding region.

Head of ABB?s power products division Bernhard Jucker said, ?These transformers will enable more electricity to reach consumers and meet growing industrial and household demand in the region.?

This order echoes the current rising demand for electricity in Saudi Arabia, which is needed to fuel its growing population and booming industry sector.

According to ABB, the kingdom plans to increase its power generation capacity by more the 50 per cent by 2020, from less than 60 GW to approximately 91 GW.
